Advantages of Lap Band Surgery

Even a few years ago, liposuction in India was the most established surgical way of reducing weight and layers of fat from the body. But the scenario has changed a lot in last two decades. With bariatric surgeries making its prominent place in the health care system, all earlier techniques have taken a back seat. Lap band surgery is another of such techniques that has been improving the quality of life by treating obesity and eliminating allied disorders which often pose a life threats to the patients.

Lap band is the common term used for gastric banding. In lap band surgery, a band adjustable in nature is placed at the upper portion of the abdomen by making a laparoscopic incision. This band is made of silicone and is adjusted as per requirement by filling it up with saline with the help of a port placed right under the stomach skin. The process of filling is same as you would blow air in a balloon in shape of a doughnut. The adjustment is done and undone as the capacity of the stomach changes with the change in your food habit and regime. This kind of surgery restricts the food intake as the pouch created by inserting the band is small and you start feeling full with the little amount of food. It slows down the process of food moving from the passage to the intestines.

Lap band surgery can be performed on obese person with a BMI of 40 kg/m2 or in special medical cases where the weight is anywhere between 35 kg/mg2 to 40 kg/m2. In other words, if you are 40 to 45 kilograms above the ideal weight and have a history of failed weight loss procedures including or excluding surgeries. Usually such surgeries are the final resorts for all those who could not succeed in losing weight and return to a normal lifestyle even after dieting, taking weight loss supplements, slogging hard in gymnasiums etc.

The effects of lap band surgery become evident only after the initial phase of healing of operation wound. For best results, you must take rest for first two weeks. If your recovery is fast and uneventful, the result of this surgery will be better. Initially, patient is recommended liquid diet, then on to semi solid and eventually solid. The span of each diet may vary as per the capacity of patient's body and opinion of the doctor. Lap band surgery cures and controls many problems that were tagged along with obesity. Women for whom obesity was a hindrance on the path to conceive, can now plan baby, though consultation would be required regarding adjustment of the band. This is the reason it is regarded as one of safest weight loss surgeries in India.
